Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Rumours on Dimitri Payet and Mesut Ozil

Tom SunderlandNov 27, 2016

Manchester United are reportedly considering a move for West Ham United winger Dimitri Payet as manager Jose Mourinho looks to add more pace to his side. Meanwhile, Arsenal's Mesut Ozil is also said to be on the Red Devils' radar.

According to the Mirror's John Richardson, Mourinho is a "big fan" of Payet, but the Hammers are understood to be seeking a sum of at least £35 million in order to part ways with their superstar.

Payet has been slightly out of sorts this season, struggling to recapture the same form that saw him take his spot in the 2015-16 PFA Premier League Team of the Year, when he led the Hammers to a seventh-place finish.

The former Olympique de Marseille maestro scored 15 goals and provided 17 assists across all competitions last season but has only one goal and four assists in 10 league outings this term, although his international displays have remained strong, per OptaJean:

United are primarily utilising Juan Mata, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Wayne Rooney on the wing, while Jesse Lingard, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Memphis Depay are also options out wide.

Mourinho will most likely splash more cash in 2017 after bringing Paul Pogba back to Old Trafford for a world-record £89 million this past summer, but Times columnist Graeme Souness has demanded more from the club's mega-money acquisition:

"

Jose Mourinho needs to simplify things for Paul Pogba to bring the best out of him and justify that £89m fee. He should be like Frank Lampard was for Mourinho at Chelsea, running into the box without the ball and scoring goals.

So far I’ve seen him as a support player, someone who wants to deliver the killer pass, but I’ve never seen him run a game from central midfield. I’d tell him to use the wonderful athleticism God’s given him and arrive in the box late at every opportunity. He’s got the legs to do that all day long, yet still get back in position when United don’t have possession.

"

Payet could help relinquish his international team-mate of some of the pressure on his shoulders and even enhance the midfielder's play, although West Ham aren't likely to prove hospitable negotiators.

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic only recently released a statement via the club's official website, issuing a hands-off message in regards to his coveted France international (h/t Goal): "The chairman came out and said during the Euros [that he was staying] when the speculation started. We are delighted to have him, and he is our player. We want him to stay as our player."

Elsewhere, the Sun's Alan Nixon reported Manchester United are interested in Arsenal star Ozil—along with Manchester City Chelsea and Juventus—as his contract talks with the north Londoners continue.

With a salary of £140,000 per week, Ozil is Arsenal's highest-paid player. OptaJean recently illustrated his pedigree among Europe's top guns:

However, it's highly unlikely Gunners manager Arsene Wenger would be open to losing arguably his most cherished star to a Premier League rival, even if his deal does expire in the summer of 2018.

Nixon added that Ozil appears more likely to sign a contract extension than team-mate Alexis Sanchez, who is also locked in talks with his employers, although Arsenal won't yet be at panic stations in their bid to tie the German down.
