Manchester City Transfer News: Latest Rumours on Kasper Dolberg

Christopher SimpsonNov 24, 2016

Manchester City could be set to rival Manchester United and Chelsea for the signature of Ajax striker Kasper Dolberg after confirming their interest in him.

According to the Sun's Anthony Chapman, Sky Blues scout Sebastian Arnesen said:

"

We are keeping a very close eye on him. When the time is right, we’ll make a decision on whether to make an attempt to sign him.

He has a huge potential. He is tall, strong, brave and quick. He has an excellent touch, can play with his back to goal and makes the right decisions.

He can finish anywhere on the pitch. He is so special and, therefore, is of course on our radar. Looking at the markets, he’s right at the top and he will know there is a great future for him at a big club.

The 19-year-old broke into the first team this season and has racked up 11 goals and four assists in all competitions for the Dutch giants.

Here is a selection of his highlights from the campaign thus far:

According to Squawka, Dolberg has created 12 chances in as many Eredivisie appearances this season as well as completing 21 take-ons and drawing 24 fouls.

His impressive form saw him earn his first cap for Denmark's senior side during November's international break.

On Sunday, he bagged an outstanding hat-trick as Ajax dispatched NEC Nijmegen 5-0, as well as providing an assist. OptaJohan put his performance in even more impressive context:

Football journalist Peter McVitie described some of the skills he displayed during the match:

The striker is an excellent dribbler, and after using his neat footwork to beat players, he accelerates away from them remarkably quickly.

Dolberg's strength would likely help him adapt to the rigours of English football, and his intelligent movement on and off the ball belies his tender years.

Football writer Michiel Jongsma and sports journalist Jonas Giaever believe Dolberg will go on to great things in the game:

Indeed, he already seems to be improving with every game.

With the world-class Sergio Aguero and hot prospect Kelechi Iheanacho set to be joined by rapidly rising star Gabriel Jesus at the Etihad Stadium in January, City have little need for more firepower.

Further, caution should be advised in recruiting goalscoring talent from the Eredivisie, as it can be something of a gamble.

Afonso Alves, Memphis Depay and Vincent Janssen were all prolific in the Netherlands but—thus far at least, in the case of the latter two—struggled to replicate their form in England.

However, on occasion it pays off handsomelyLiverpool recruited Luis Suarez from Ajax, and he netted 82 goals for the Reds in three-and-a-half seasons, nearly firing them to the Premier League title in his final year.

Dolberg looks to be an exceptional talent with a bright future, so even if City aren't desperate for his services, it seems likely they'll pursue him. If they do, they can recruit an excellent player and deal a significant blow to their rivals at the same time.
