Goldberg, Lesnar, Samoa Joe and More from the Thanksgiving Mailbag

Alfred KonuwaNov 24, 2016

It's Thanksgiving, and on this day, I'm thankful for the internet. Twitter went through the many stages of grief—from denial to acceptance—over Goldberg's squash against Brock Lesnar. What started as pure outrage ended up as somewhat of an understanding that maybe this wasn't such a bad thing.

Goldberg Standard?

There's nothing embarrassing about Goldberg, a big star who came in hot and only got hotter leading up to his dream match against Brock Lesnar, defeating The Beast in quick fashion. This match shocked fans out of the basic routine of professional wrestling, which is hard to do with a jaded fanbase.

It hearkened back to what made Goldberg such a phenomenon in the first place. This reminded me of Goldberg's debut match in WCW against Hugh Morrus. Goldberg was overlooked by design, as fans expected Morrus to make quick work of the unfamiliar rookie. From there, Goldberg squashed Morrus, and 173 wins later, he became arguably WCW's biggest star of the Monday Night Wars.

WWE simply went back to the basics—telling Goldberg's story, making him human so that he would be a bigger babyface and allowing him to become the killing machine that made him famous. There will be a rematch, and Lesnar will likely win, but after Survivor Series, nothing is guaranteed. That's exactly how pro wrestling should be.

Main Roster Revival?

It wouldn't be a stretch to say The Revival is the best team in all of WWE. Not only does it not have bad matches, but it's rare to see it in anything other than sensational matches, especially on pay-per-view. The former two-time NXT champions are ready for the main roster, and they'd be the perfect candidates to end The New Day's near-record-breaking championship run.

The New Day is closing in on Demolition for longest tag team championship reign. Should it break that record, The Revival would benefit immensely from breaking that streak in its debut match, especially if it was the type of breathtaking contest the duo is known for.

In addition to a feud with The New Day, Raw is in much more need of tag team depth than SmackDown, which has a loaded tag team division, including The Usos, American Alpha and current champions Heath Slater and Rhyno.

In addition to its in-ring skills in the tag team ranks, The Revival's brilliance also lies in its simplicity. Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder are just boring human beings who are straight-up wrestlers. They aren't trying to win a popularity contest, and it shows.

The Revival constantly feuds against wildly popular teams like Enzo Amore and Big Cass, American Alpha and now DIY. This creates a stark contrast between good and evil and helps bolster fan engagement. It's also why The New Day would make the perfect opponent for this up-and-coming unit.

Joe West, Young Man

Not only should NXT be winding down its feud with Samoa Joe and Shinsuke Nakamura, but at least one of these NXT Superstars should be on the main roster by early next year as well. Both have been ready to compete on WWE programming since their debuts, and Joe seems to have run his course in developmental.

Joe is the first-ever two-time NXT champion. This should not be a point of pride; rather, it's a sign that he has been in Florida too long.

There is a litany of potential feuds on both Raw and SmackDown that could be mutually beneficial for Joe and his would-be opponent. Sami Zayn, Neville and Apollo Crews are among a handful of currently struggling WWE Superstars whose involvement with Joe would bring them back to relevance.

While NXT's current problem—too much talent in developmental—is a good problem, it can afford to lose Samoa Joe, as the brand has proved to be resilient by thriving after similarly big stars bolted for the main roster.
