Clinton Portis Preaches Motivation

Some weeks back, I said that Washington football would rise and fall with the many moods of Clinton Portis.

And now that the season is panning out to be far more "plummet" than promise, we see the usually-laid back Clinton Portis energizing himself to turn this thing around. And teammates are taking notice.

“I think my normal demeanor is more sitting over to the side, relaxing,” he said. “I think people began to feed off that demeanor, and all of the sudden everybody’s to the side relaxing. So it was pretty much just trying to find a way to get guys into the game, to keep guys believing and to let ‘em know, if we make a mistake, it don’t matter. We’re gonna go out and we’re still gonna get it done.”

You know its bad when a guy who prides himself on not motivating teammates, resorts to motivating teammates. It’s just too bad that no one within the organization can see that the mess with Washington football isn’t one thing. It isn’t just one side of the ball playing with deficiencies, it isn’t just bad play calling, it isn’t just poor ownership or fickle fans.

It’s everything.

The unusual part about this fiasco is that its genesis is the one thing no one can change. No one can force Snyder to sell the team, unless fans, in droves, elect to no longer finance a slipshod operation. That’s not likely to happen, so you’re stuck as a fan.

You’re stuck with the usual meddling on draft picks and free agent signings. Stuck with the same hot/cold feelings for coaches. And most of all, you’re stuck with a local media that secretly hopes for Brian Orakpo to stand between two pillars at FedEx Field and push with everything he’s got.

So I can dig Clinton Portis for coming out with the emergency energy. Lord knows that this team, destined for 4-12, is going to need it in the worst way.
