Why Florida State Has Nothing to Worry About...
A major story over the past few days has been the possible removal of, legendary football coach, Bobby Bowden, but is he really the one at fault here? Let's take into consideration they lost to Boston College thanks to a sloppy first half of offense and a bad pass interference call on the safety Jamie Robinson, the opening game against Miami came down to one final play, and the South Florida loss came down to the wire as well and was lost really because of 4 fumbles. Take a look at how the true Seminoles played against a very good BYU Cougar team, they are still extremely athletic, still good hitters, and still can knock off a powerhouse on any given Saturday. Florida State's star RB Jermaine Thomas has been banged up and their defensive secondary has been sporatic, but the positive thing is they have depth, they have talent and they are still very very good. The only reason FSU has struggled with inconsistency is because they has a fleet of freshmen and sophomores playing in major roles. CB/KR/PR Greg Reid, DT Jaccobi McDaniel, WR Bert Reed, WR Jarmon Fortson, LB Nigel Bradham, SS Jajuan Harley, LB Nigel Carr, and RB Jermaine Thomas. These guys have all been major playmakers for the Seminoles as well very young I would suggest the War Chant nation exercise a little bit of patience before you go running off the person who built your program up.
The people who are at fault are Florida State's upperclassmen and coaching staff. Seniors such as Rod Owens, Dekoda Watson, Kendall Smith, Markus White, Ochuko Jenje, Korey Mangum, and Kendrick Stewart. These seniors have not only underachieved on the field but as leaders as well. When your Seniors cannot calm down your team and don't come with discipline and consistency then I think that's where the issue is. Mickey Andrews, defensive coordinator, your all man defense doesn't seem to work because all teams are doing on you are putting double moves on your DB's. You can't blame your cornerback for jumping a post-corner route because if they were as "disciplined" as you would want they would just allow the WR to catch a 25 yard pass on a post. See it seems to me you may just want to bring 2 high safeties or at least one safety over the top to protect your corners. The defense is the fault for every loss except USF and even then gave up the big play like they have all season long. My advise to Mickey Andrews take a note from the best Monte Kiffin formerly the Tampa Bay Bucs defensive coordinator and so many other NFL coaches...PUT SAFETY HELP OVER THE TOP!!!! But all in all this team still has great players, future NFL stars and guys who are still hungry to win and transform FSU into a consistent top 5 team. Because let's be honest they were terrible against Miami and now look how much better they have gotten. Patience is a virtue and just like we were patient with the offense in the 7-6 years we are going to have to be patient with the defense now.
For the patiently waiting Seminole fans just know it is darkest before the dawn and while this seems like a tough time see the positives. 1. You have a QB in Christian Ponder who is emerging into the best QB you have had since Charlie Ward, 2. Your freshmen and sophomores have all seen significant playing time and that means that the sky is the limit for them for the next 2 or 3 years, 3. Jimbo Fisher is your head coach in waiting and if you think he isn't capable keep in mind what Nick Saban is doing and he is from his coaching tree, 4. You have great recruiting classes and look to be bringing in yet another great class, and lastly 5. You have one of the best lines in the country and yes they have struggled to block the run but guys how many of you think you can block an 8 man box or 9 man box with 5 or 6 lineman? Yeah it's not too easy so keep passing and keep getting better and tell the Florida Gators that you are bringing the wood this year.
