The Revival vs. DIY: Winner and Reaction from NXT TakeOver: Toronto

Mike ChiariNov 19, 2016

DIY defeated The Revival in a 2-out-of-3 Falls match Saturday at NXT TakeOver: Toronto to become NXT tag team champions for the first time.

The Revival took the lead by winning the first fall with a Shatter Machine and putting DIY in a 1-0 hole, as WWE's official Twitter account shared:

Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa managed to even the score shortly thereafter, however, with a combination of a superkick and knee strike, via WWE:

After plenty of back-and-forth action with near-falls for both teams, DIY finally put the match away by forcing Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder to tap out at the same time.

Dawson and Wilder became the first two-time NXT tag champs when they defeated American Alpha for the straps in June, but ever since that time, they have been within the sights of Gargano and Ciampa.

DIY beat The Revival in a match before they became champions, which earned them a shot at the straps at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn II in August.

Gargano and Ciampa appeared to be on the verge of winning the titles, but The Revival targeted and injured Johnny Wrestling's knee, which forced him to tap out.

Despite the loss, DIY were undeterred as they continued to push for another opportunity at the titles Dawson and Wilder have monopolized for most of the past year.

Before their title shot came at TakeOver: Toronto, however, DIY were scheduled to face The Revival in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. Dawson feigned an injury to get out of the match, which added more fuel to their heated rivalry.

After Gargano and Ciampa were eliminated by The Authors of Pain in the semifinals of the Dusty Classic, it opened the door for them to go after the NXT tag straps one more time.

Entering Saturday's match, Ciampa believed it would be DIY's night and a culmination of everything they have worked so hard to achieve:

Dawson countered with a tweet of his own, suggesting he and Wilder had scratched and clawed even more to get to the top:

The Revival and DIY put on one of the year's best tag team matches at TakeOver: Brooklyn II, so they had a high bar to live up to Saturday.

Even so, their chemistry was again on full display, and the teams combined to produce another fantastic performance on the big stage.

By virtue of their victory, DIY finally reached the pinnacle of NXT's tag team division, but one can only assume a rematch with Dawson and Wilder is on the horizon.

Depending on how that potential contest plays out, a rivalry with The Authors of Pain could be in store for Gargano and Ciampa, while a call-up to the main roster on Raw or SmackDown is a possibility for The Revival.
