Why the Patriots can cover the spread
New England, which GambleOnline.co noted is the Super Bowl 51 favorite, is playing its second consecutive NFC West opponent after falling to the Seattle Seahawks 31-24 as 7.5-point home chalk in the Week 10 Sunday night matchup.
The Patriots are 16-3 straight up in their last 19 games following a loss and 4-1 against the spread the past five times after losing the previous matchup in a series. The teams last met in 2012 at Gillette Stadium, with San Francisco winning 41-34 as 3.5-point road dogs.
But the 49ers are a much different team now, and Tom Brady and his teammates will certainly be looking to take out their frustrations this week away from home off the Seattle loss.
Why the 49ers can cover the spread
The 49ers have surprisingly won seven of the past 10 meetings with New England SU, although they do not play each other often. San Francisco's lone win this season came at home back in Week 1, and motivation should be high considering this is the team's Super Bowl in a sense.
In the last meeting four years ago, quarterback Colin Kaepernick helped the 49ers hold off the Patriots with four touchdown passes, while Brady threw for 443 yards but was picked off twice en route to a loss. New England seems to have trouble with running quarterbacks, as Russell Wilson of the Seahawks and Tyrod Taylor of the Buffalo Bills are the only two to beat them this season.
Smart pick
It's hard to go against Brady and Co. in this spot. He will be playing the team he grew up rooting for, which is just 1-7 ATS during its skid. The Patriots have covered the spread in three of the past four meetings, including the loss in the last one, and should have no problem winning by more than two touchdowns in another road rout.
Betting trends
The Patriots are 3-1 ATS in their last four games against the 49ers.
The 49ers are 0-8 SU and 1-7 ATS in their last eight games.
The total has gone under in seven of the 49ers' last nine games as home underdogs.
