Manchester United Transfer News: Memphis Depay Comments Amid Everton Rumours

Chris LakerNov 13, 2016

Manchester United winger Memphis Depay hasn't ruled out a move away from the club amid rumours Everton are planning a loan bid.

Depay scored twice for the Netherlands as they beat Luxembourg 3-1 and is being targeted by Everton boss and fellow Dutchman Ronald Koeman, per Alec Shilton of the Sun.

Per the report, Depay said of any potential transfer: "I do not know, we’ll have to see. I focus on United, I do my very best to be able to get minutes. I’m going back to United with a good feeling, because I have got minutes here and we won. That is the most important thing."

Depay's remarks come as Koeman revealed he would be keen on taking the player to Goodison Park should he become surplus to requirements at Old Trafford. Per Shilton, the Everton manager said: "I would like to have him. I think he is an interesting player. He has great individual qualities. He just needs to play games."

Depay arrived to much fanfare at United from PSV Eindhoven for £25 million in the summer of 2015. He was named best young player in the world by France Football last year, per TalkSport, but he has struggled to make any sort of impact in the Premier League since his move from the Eredivisie.

And now his days at Manchester United look numbered as he has failed to force his way into manager Jose Mourinho's plans.

Depay has played a meagre 20 minutes for a United side that has been off the pace in the league this season, a sure sign that Mourinho doesn't trust him as a player who can win him matches.

Mourinho is spoilt for attacking options in the positions that Depay would normally feature. While the 22-year-old shows occasional promise when facing up opponents, too often it is easy for defenders to track him infield and ward off any danger.

Depay doesn't offer the goal threat or power of Anthony Martial, and Marcus Rashford's positional awareness also puts him ahead in the pecking order.

Darren Lewis for the Mirror suggested Depay made a huge mistake by requesting the famous No. 7 shirt when he joined United and has faltered ever since.

"In signalling his intention to follow the likes of [David] Beckham, [Cristiano] Ronaldo, [Eric] Cantona and [George] Best, Depay had targeted some pretty big shoes to fill. Way too big as it turned out," Lewis wrote.

This seems unlikely. It could be regarded as a sign of confidence by Depay in demanding the shirt. Perhaps he trusted his ability to become a star at Old Trafford.

It is clear to see Depay needs a fresh start away from United. A switch to Everton, a January loan or otherwise, would provide a once highly rated player with the chance of regular action.

It was a switch that worked out well for striker Romelu Lukaku when he moved to Goodison on loan from Chelsea in 2013 after being unable to compete with the depth in quality at his parent club, and the Dutch forward can fare likewise away from the Old Trafford cauldron.
