Kovalev vs. Ward: Live Round-by-Round Results and Fight Highlights
Andre Ward survived a vicious second-round knockdown to snatch the unified light heavyweight championship from Sergey Kovalev via razor-thin and perhaps controversial unanimous decision on Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Scores were 114-113 across the board for Ward.
Bleacher Report's unofficial scorecard had it 116-111 for Kovalev.
Ward (31-0, 15 KO) seemed on his way out of the fight early when he caught a huge right hand and was put on the deck in the second round. He rose and seemed to be on wobbly legs before surviving the round and impressively working his way back into the fight.
Kovalev (31-1-1, 26 KO) controlled the action in the early going.
The knockdown seemed to give him added confidence to attack Ward behind a jab. He was able to break through his tight defensive guard frequently and score with big punches upstairs that we're not used to seeing Ward get hit with.
But the fight changed around the midway point.
Ward began to find his offensive rhythm and make the fight ugly with a good amount of grappling and in-fighting, zapping some of the Krusher's energy and allowing him to nip enough close rounds to secure the close verdict.
