Chelsea Transfer News: Latest Rumours, Elite Signings Reportedly Eyed by Blues

Tom SunderlandNov 12, 2016

Chelsea are reportedly hoping to fend off Atletico Madrid's interest in re-signing Diego Costa by offering their star striker a new contract at Stamford Bridge. Meanwhile, Fiorentina defender Nenad Tomovic is said to be on the Blues' wanted list.

According to the Mirror's Darren Lewis, Chelsea are eager to reward the Spain frontman for his prolific start to the season and are ready to hand him "lucrative" terms in order to keep Los Rojiblancos at bay.

Costa still has over two-and-a-half years remaining on the £150,000-a-week deal he signed upon moving to west London in the summer of 2014, but it appears even that isn't enough of a safety net for his employers.

After a drab 2015-16 campaign, Costa has looked back to his best in the Premier League this season, and OptaJoe provided evidence he's ready to lift his side back into title contention under new manager Antonio Conte:

The striker has thrived under the Italian so far this season, capitalising on the 3-4-3 formation implemented by Conte. The tactical switch has seen a great focus on the wide areas, which has been a major benefit for Costa.

However, speculation surrounding a move back to former club Atletico has once again intensified this week after Costa shared a photo of his reunion with former boss Diego Simeone while away on international duty, per Spanish daily Sport:

Costa has been linked with a move back to the Vicente Calderon since coming to Chelsea in the summer of 2014, although there's a question hanging over whether the Spaniards could offer the money to tempt the Blues into a sale.

The 28-year-old is once again a highly valued member of the Chelsea dressing room, and a new contract would effectively end any talk of a return to Atleti for now. Sports lawyer Jake Cohen recently illustrated the forward's importance to the team in west London:

There's potential recruitment news in defence, too, after the Daily Star's Paul Brown reported Chelsea are interested in Fiorentina star Tomovic, who is the latest centre-back target associated with a move to Stamford Bridge.

The Premier League giants were linked with a series of central defenders before settling on a move to re-sign former star David Luiz this past summer, but Conte is still thought to be seeking further additions.

Brown said in his report that one of those targets, Juventus stopper Leonardo Bonucci, is set to sign a new contract in Turin, while AC Milan have blocked the Blues at every turn in their hunt to sign Alessio Romagnoli.

Tomovic, 29, has made 146 appearances for La Viola since joining the club from Genoa in 2012, and the player could link up with Serbian compatriot Branislav Ivanovic in a possible January swoop.
