NCAA Foootball: Week 5 Awards

Alex FergusonOct 6, 2009

Back after a lovely weekend in Athens, Georgia watching the UGA-LSU game, yours truly has a few awards to give out.

As we said, we're not doing booze. After a weekend in Athens, you can understand why.

The "Sorry, did they just rush?" Award

1. Penn State—for putting up 338 on Illinois. That's pretty ****ing good. Not going to dust off my "Royster4Heisman" T-Shirt, but get this: him and speedster Stefphon Green are a classic "Thunder and Lightning" Combination.

2. Noel Devine. Another superstar in the West Virginia Mountaineers backfield. West Virginia hasn't been particularly wonderful this year, but Devine put up over 200 yards against Colorado on Thursday night.

3. Donald Buckram, UTEP. Rushed for 262 yards and 4 touchdowns in the monster 58-41 blowout of Houston.

The "What A Game" Award

1. Georgia vs. LSU. Two SEC monsters batter each other, and LSU escapes with a 20-13 win—mostly due to a couple of B.S. celebration calls from the wonderful SEC officials.

2. Michigan State upsets Michigan. Forcier throws an interception in overtime. Someone wise once said: "Every time Michigan loses, an angel gets its wings." Flap! Flap!

3. Notre Dame vs. Washington. Washington has come a heck of a long way, and Notre Dame keeps finding ways to survive.

4. Oklahoma vs. Miami. Miami's 21-20 win over OU showed one thing: Jacory Harris is as good as we thought. This Landry Jones kid ain't bad either.

The "Overrated" Award

1. We still think that Alabama's a better team than Texas. They've certainly played a tougher schedule.

2. LSU is a poor No. 4.

The "Surprised They Got This Right" Award

The Pollsters! The Top 25 is pretty much in line with what I think, apart from the idiots in the USA Today Poll who think Penn State is better than Iowa despite losing to the Hawkeyes.

The "Can't Wait" Award

1. Florida at LSU. It's going to be noisy in Death Valley. For the first half, anyway.

2. Ole Miss at Alabama. 'Bama out to show the SEC West who's boss.

3. Oregon at UCLA. Neuheisel needs some believers. Fast. Oregon needs to continue taking some names and kicking some butt.

4. Michigan at Iowa. Iowa's got a good rank while Michigan's finally fallen out after failing in heart attack game No. 17 of the season. Forcier's a good quarterback—can his O-Line deal with Iowa's rush?

5. Auburn at Arkansas. Can the miracle known as Chizik continue in Hogland?

The "Stupid Penalty" Award

The SEC refs in Athens this weekend, who gave three celebration calls in the Georgia-LSU game. The first two were totally unwarranted and the third was a make-up call. Why not throw out this stupid rule altogether?
