Manchester United Transfer News: Bastian Schweinsteiger MLS Talks, Fresh Rumours

Bastian Schweinsteiger has reportedly held talks with "a number of MLS sides" as he heads for the exit door at Manchester United in January. 

According to Squawka's Greg Stobart, the German has been informed there is no future for him at Old Trafford and is hoping to join a Major League Soccer team in the winter, preferably a franchise in a "major north American city such as Los Angeles or New York."

Schweinsteiger could move there for free if he can reach an agreement with the Red Devils regarding a pay-off from his £150,000-per-week deal, which runs until the end of next season.

Manager Jose Mourinho has not handed the 32-year-old a single appearance despite United often struggling once again this season.

Indeed, while he may be past his prime, the former Bayern Munich man is still a classy operator and a calming presence in midfield.

It's clear he won't be given the opportunity to show that, so a move to MLS in the footsteps of fellow midfield legends Andrea Pirlo and Steven Gerrard would appear to be a smart one.

With Schweinsteiger set to depart, Michael Carrick now 35 and Marouane Fellaini limited in his capacity to contribute, there's scope for United to bring in another body next summer.

A specialist holding midfielder would be a more pressing need, to allow Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera the freedom to roam as they please, but a player of Rakitic's quality would be a significant coup.
