Arsenal Transfer News: Gabriel Barbosa Interest Reported, Latest Gunners Rumours

Christopher SimpsonNov 11, 2016

Arsenal are reportedly interested in snapping up Inter Milan forward Gabriel Barbosa, who could be set to leave the San Siro despite only arriving in the summer.

According to Gianmarco Lotti of Italian outlet Calcionews24 (h/t the Mirror's Aaron Flanagan), the Brazilian—better known as Gabigol—joined Inter for £26 million but has struggled to make an impact.

The Gunners, Chelsea and Barcelona are believed to be the teams circling the 20-year-old, who netted 24 goals for Santos in his homeland prior to joining the Serie A outfit.

Gabigol also netted twice for Brazil at the 2016 Rio Olympics this summer as he helped the Selecao to a gold medal.

However, his move to Inter has thus far been a disaster. He has played just once for his new side, a total of 16 minutes on the field.

As noted by sports journalist Jonas Giaever, former Inter boss Frank de Boer refused to use him even when the side were in need of his abilities:

Indeed, per beIN Sports' Matteo Bonetti, according to the Dutchman's brother, he had not wanted Gabigol in his side:

The youngster is a hot prospect, though, who could be a useful asset to Inter—or indeed Arsenal.

Barbosa is a pacy and creative attacker who can play centrally or out wide. He's a strong passer of the ball and typically finishes in a cool and composed manner.

Like many of his compatriots, he is also blessed with exceptional technique and skill.

Here's a look at some of his best qualities:

With Inter's change in management, however, there could yet be hope of turning his fledgling Serie A career around.

While new coach Stefano Pioli did not confirm Gabigol is definitely in his plans, he did offer him a glimmer of hope, per the club's official Twitter feed:

Barbosa will likely be eager to have his move to Inter work out, so if Pioli restores him to the team, it will be difficult to prise him away.

Meanwhile, according to the Sun's Mark Irwin, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho could try to recruit Mesut Ozil next summer if he is still yet to sign a new deal with Arsenal by then.

The German is seemingly content to stay at the Emirates Stadium, but the Red Devils are reportedly willing to offer him £250,000 per week at Old Trafford, compared with the £160,000 weekly salary he's been offered by Arsenal.

Mourinho and Ozil won La Liga at Real Madrid in 2012 and have "maintained a good relationship" with one another since.

Irwin added the playmaker's representatives could use United's reported interest to prompt a stronger offer from the Gunners.

Ozil will have just one year left on his current deal at the end of the season—losing him would be disastrous in itself, but were he to leave on a cut-price deal, they wouldn't even get the financial benefit of selling a world-class player.

While the Gunners' desire to remain well-run financially is admirable, keeping the likes of Ozil is vital to regaining the Premier League title—they need to reach an agreement with him sooner rather than later.
