Liverpool Transfer News: Hector Herrera Interest Amid Napoli Talk, Fresh Rumours

Tom SunderlandNov 11, 2016

Liverpool are reportedly ready to return for FC Porto midfielder Hector Herrera in January after examining the Mexico international's situation over the course of the summer transfer window.

Herrera has long been linked with a move away from the Estadio do Dragao, and Portuguese newspaper A Bola (h/t Bruce Archer of the Daily Express) reported the Reds are now ready to make a move.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is thought to rank among the 26-year-old's admirers, and the Merseysiders will be in need of reinforcements this winter if they're to maintain their standing atop the Premier League.

Herrera could come in to partner the likes of Jordan Henderson, Emre Can or James Milner should he arrive at Anfield, and KICK showed the player brings an attacking threat following his strike against Rio Ave in August:

Although a central midfielder by trade, Herrera has lined up largely on the right side of midfield this season, and Liverpool will need cover in that area when Sadio Mane heads off to the Africa Cup of Nations in the new year.

The Reds also lost some attacking depth after Danny Ings suffered a season-ending knee injury earlier in November.

Meanwhile, fan account Empire of the Kop pointed out just how much Klopp missed midfield force Adam Lallana when he was rested against Derby County in the EFL Cup in September, and Herrera could be a welcome back-up should the 28-year-old need a rest:

Herrera was once considered a critical component at Porto, but the 26-year-old's involvement has slipped this season as manager Nuno Espirito Santo—appointed in June 2016—has preferred alternatives in his starting XI.

In fact, the Mexico star has featured for the full 90 minutes in just four of his eight Primeira Liga appearances, which could be the change in circumstance that convinces him to move to the Premier League next year.

According to A Bola (h/t Football Italia), Porto are also prepared to stand firm on Herrera's €40 million (£35 million) valuation if they're to sell, with Napoli also interested.

Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund director of sport Michael Zorc has confirmed the Germans are attempting to tie starlet Christian Pulisic down to a new contract after telling Sports Illustrated (h/t The Independent's Harvey Burgess):

"

Because of his development the club is ready to speak to him to prolong his contract at any time.

There have been some offers for him in the summer window from England and from German clubs, but we would like to have him here and develop him here. We did not educate him to sell him.

"

The United States international has made remarkable strides at Signal Iduna Park since breaking into the first team this year, and manager Thomas Tuchel has reaped the rewards for his show of faith in the 18-year-old.

It seems unlikely Pulisic might seek a move after scoring twice and recording five assists this season, and although his current deal won't expire until 2019, Dortmund are keen to extend his stay—and unsurprisingly so.
