Brandon Marshall Comments on Bryce Petty, Todd Bowles and More

Tyler ConwayNov 7, 2016

A day after getting into an argument with Ryan Fitzpatrick on the sideline, New York Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall declined to call for backup Bryce Petty to replace the embattled quarterback.

"It's easy to throw darts at the quarterback in this situation...but all of us need to play better," Marshall told reporters on a conference call Monday.

Marshall made six receptions for 45 yards in Sunday's loss to the Miami Dolphins, which snapped a two-game winning streak. Fitzpatrick was once again erratic throughout, throwing two interceptions and fumbling twice (both recovered by the Jets) before Petty replaced him late.

Marshall and Fitzpatrick had a heated verbal exchange on the sidelines, which the receiver discussed with reporters Sunday:

"

You guys know how I feel about Fitz. I stood on the table for him all offseason. I would do it again. That wouldn't change, but we're here to produce. This falls on him and I. We have to make plays. That's part of the ballgame. So much on the line today. When you're sitting at 3-5, every single play counts, every single drive counts. Things got a little heated. It's part of the game. My love for Fitz and how I feel about Fitz is not going to change.

"

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Fitzpatrick suffered an MCL sprain against the Dolphins. The injury isn't considered serious, but coach Todd Bowles is yet to commit to Fitzpatrick as his starter for Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Bowles has taken criticism for sticking with Fitzpatrick through his struggles, though circumstances have dictated that to a degree. The Jets named Geno Smith their starter for Oct. 23's game against the Baltimore Ravens, but he suffered a season-ending knee injury after only eight passes.

Marshall told reporters the team still believes in Bowles as its leader.

"He's one of the best I've been around. ... I love playing for him," he said.

He did stop short of saying every Jets player is 100 percent committed. Defensive stars Muhammad Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson were benched for the first quarter of Sunday's game after being late for a team meeting, per Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. Connor Hughes of NJ.com reported it's part of a pattern of insubordination from Wilkerson and Richardson, who allegedly are late or miss meetings "all the time."

Marshall would not comment on either player. Richardson and Marshall previously got into a verbal altercation following a Week 3 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN.com.

The Jets have already posted as many losses as they had all of 2015, so change is clearly needed. Odds are that will start with the quarterback position, but things may snowball if the situation continues to deteriorate.
