Manchester United Transfer News: Memphis Depay to Reject Marseille, Top Rumours

Matt JonesNov 7, 2016

Manchester United’s out-of-favour winger Memphis Depay is reportedly ready to reject a move to Marseille in the January transfer window and fight for his place at Old Trafford.

That’s according to L’Equipe (h/t Goal), who stated the 22-year-old starlet is subject of interest from the Ligue 1 side and United are happy to let him leave on loan. However, Depay is said to be keen to stick around with the Red Devils and impress manager Jose Mourinho.

Unfortunately for the former PSV Eindhoven man, chances to show what he can offer have been scarce under the Portuguese. Indeed, despite United having played in three different competitions already this term, he’s started just one match—in the EFL Cup—and sampled just 20 minutes of Premier League football.

It’s a situation that many didn’t expect Depay to be in when he arrived at Old Trafford in the summer of 2015 with a reputation as one of the most enthralling young talents around.

Here’s a look at why there was so much buzz around the player:

However, since he’s joined United, Depay has failed to kick on. While there’s unquestionably some talent to tap into when it comes to the winger, he loses possession too frequently, has lacked work rate and found the physicality of the English game tough to cope with.

Football podcaster Nipun Chopra feels as though the Dutchman could benefit from a potential tweak in his position:

If he’s going to stay at United, then that could be something for Mourinho to look at, although Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcus Rashford are both excellent options to lead the line.

Therein lies the key issue for the Oranje star. While he may have all the willingness in the world to make an impact with the Red Devils, Ibrahimovic, Rashford, Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard are all ahead of him in the forward positions. A loan move would surely be a better option to prove his worth than flittering on the fringes with United.

Morgan Schneiderlin Exit Rumours

According to Richard Gibson of the Sunday Mirror, Crystal Palace have emerged as rivals to Tottenham Hotspur for United midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.

The Frenchman has barely featured under Mourinho and was unceremoniously hooked at half-time during the Red Devils’ 2-1 loss to Fenerbahce in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday. Schneiderlin has only played five minutes of Premier League football in 2016-17, all of which came on the opening day of the season against Bournemouth.

Having long shone for Southampton, there was excitement at Old Trafford when they secured the signature of the midfielder; he’d been one of the division’s best in his position during the 2014-15 campaign.

However, after struggling to make an impact with the Red Devils in his debut term, Schneiderlin has been marginalised by Mourinho.

Sports journalist Liam Canning would like to see more of the Frenchman:

At full throttle for Saints, the 26-year-old brought so many qualities to the hub of the side. Physically, Schneiderlin could dominate opponents with his powerful frame and strength in the air, and in possession, he would frequently move the ball through phases and make contributions high up the pitch.

Unfortunately for the player, his days at United look numbered under Mourinho, with Gibson adding the club would be willing to move him on for just £12.5 million. For Palace or Spurs, Schneiderlin could represent a very savvy January acquisition at that price.
