Arrogate Takes The Breeders' Cup Classic
California Chrome was expected to be the class of the field on Saturday. As a horse that had already made $13.4 million, a win at Santa Anita would ensure he was the highest-earning thoroughbred ever, per the NBC Sports telecast.
Given that he had won his past six races, it was easy to see why Chrome was the favorite at even, per the Breeders' Cup official website.
However, there were some who believed Arrogate, who won the Travers Stakes in record time, could give Chrome a serious run for his money.
Chrome shot out of the gates at the start and quickly got to the inside where he comfortably set the pace, while Arrogate was four lengths off the lead.
Moving past the half-mile mark, Arrogate moved into third, while Chrome pulled almost a length in front of second-place Melatonin.
Coming out of the far turn, though, Arrogate moved from the outside and in toward the rail, quickly overtaking Melatonin.
Into the stretch, Chrome's position forced Arrogate to move back outside, but it didn't make a difference. Arrogate turned on the jets within the final furlong and with 12 strides left, overcame the favorite to win the Breeders' Cup Classic.
His trainer Bob Baffert became the first trainer to ever win three straight Breeders' Cup Classics. In 2014, Bayern also beat California Chrome, while American Pharoah capped off a historic Triple Crown season in 2015 with a classic win.
