Manchester United Transfer News: Latest on Bastian Schweinsteiger Exit Rumours

Matt JonesNov 4, 2016

Manchester United are willing to part with £10 million to offload veteran midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger in the January transfer window.

That's according to Daniel Cutts of the Sun, who noted that while the Red Devils want rid of the former Germany captain, there are no teams making their interest known.

Consequently "United have all but resigned themselves to the fact they will have to give [the] 32-year-old the staggering payoff,” according to the report, with Schweinsteiger said to still be owed around £18 million in wages for the final two years of his contract at Old Trafford.

It’s stated a move to Major League Soccer in the United States or the Chinese Super League is the most likely course of action for the FIFA World Cup winner.

The former Bayern Munich man had been marginalised by manager Jose Mourinho early in the campaign. However, he recently returned to first-team training, having previously been working alone or with the under-23 setup.

"Bastian is fulfilling his obligations by training each day and is in terrific shape," said a source, quoted by Cutts. "He’s looking as good as he has since he arrived at the club. United are hoping a club will still come forward to take him off their hands in the upcoming window, but there are no takers as of yet."

However, Mourinho could find himself in a situation where he may have to call upon the German. After all, Ander Herrera is suspended for Sunday's game against Swansea City and Paul Pogba hobbled out of Thursday's clash with Fenerbahce. Rob Dawson of the Manchester Evening News suggested Schweinsteiger could be useful as a result:

Indeed, prior to the Fenerbahce tussle, Mourinho suggested that if there were a personnel crisis in the middle of the park, the German could be called upon.

"At this moment, we don't have any problems in midfield like we have in defence," the Portuguese said, per Ciaran Kelly of the Manchester Evening News. "But if one day we have problems in midfield, [Schweinsteiger] will be one more option for us.”

United could benefit from the veteran’s composure in the middle of the park. The Red Devils are in poor form, following up Saturday's 0-0 draw with Burnley in the Premier League with a 2-1 defeat to Fenerbahce.

The performance epitomised United under Mourinho so far: defensively sloppy, disjointed in midfield and unimaginative in the final third. Paul Hayward of the Daily Telegraph isn’t quite sure where the manager stands:

Although he’s had his problems with injuries and is past the peak of his powers, Mourinho could do worse than draft in Schweinsteiger. The German is composed on the ball, would settle this team down and has the experience needed to get through difficult points in games.

With Herrera suspended and Pogba potentially missing for the trip to Swansea, the manager has some big decisions to make. Schweinsteiger might be on the move in January, but in the short term, he could fix some issues that have gripped this team and potentially be a catalyst for an upturn in form.
