Breeders' Cup 2016 Entries: Lineup Odds and Predictions for Friday Races

Tom SunderlandNov 4, 2016

The 2016 Breeders' Cup is edging toward fever pitch, and Friday is the point at which one of the biggest events on the horse racing calendar will step things up a notch.

Four races will take place on Friday as the festival gets its true start, including the Juvenile Turf, the Juvenile Fillies Turf, the Las Vegas Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile and the Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff.

Some of those races on offer have favourites so strong that it's difficult to see from where the competition will arise, while other events are wide-open and ready to be won by any horse willing enough to take it.

6Forever Unbridled20-1

8Beholder7-2

The Breeders' Cup Distaff is the most lucrative opportunity for those in action on Friday. The Racing Post has valued the total prize pool at £1.25 million, with a huge £750,000 of that going to the victor.

As things stand, the favourite to claim that prize is 10-11 favourite Songbird, who was recently the subject of a race preview from At The Races, which suggested another performance under pressure could be possible:

Backers of the Jerry Hollendorfer-trained three-year-old will have been buoyed by the fact that the horse is in relaxed preparation for Friday's outing too, as the official Breeders' Cup Twitter account showed:

To illustrate just how far ahead of the pack Songbird is, it's worth pointing out that her nearest competitors Stellar Wind and Beholderare priced way off the top pick at 13-4 and 7-2, respectively.

With 11 wins in 11 races in her career and having shown immense comfort near the Distaff distance of one mile and one furlong, a 12th career victory is within reach for one of this weekend's must-watch fillies.

Predicted Winner: Songbird

Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile

1Vyjack12-1
2Tom's Ready20-1
3Dortmund5-6
4Point Piper25-1
5Accelerate50-1
6Texas Chrome16-1
7Runhappy5-1
8Tamarkuz9-1
9Gun Runner11-2

Were it not for the likes of American Pharoah and California Chrome, Dortmund would most likely have many more wins to his name thus far in his career, but a grand title is up for grabs this Friday.

The four-year-old colt is the top pick to take home this year's Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile win at odds of 5-6, per Odds Shark, and NBC's Jerry Bailey recently said the German-inspired star could rival for top spot:

That being said, the Dirt Mile isn't predetermined by any stretch of the imagination, and TVG reporter Christina Blacker has tipped 12-1 pick Vyjack for a strong display:

Vyjack has placed top two in each of his last four races, winning two of those, and experience would appear to be on his side, as the six-year-old enters the Dirt Mile as one of the eldest runners on display.

Fans can expect Runhappy and Gun Runner to also challenge for first place at respective odds of 5-1 and 11-2, but this looks like Dortmund's race to lose after a long period of battling against elite rivals.

Predicted Winner: Dortmund
