Brock Lesnar vs. Goldberg: Winner and Reaction for WWE Survivor Series 2016

Mike ChiariNov 20, 2016

After falling to Goldberg 12 years ago at WrestleMania XX, Brock Lesnar suffered the same fate Sunday night at Survivor Series, as he was once again defeated by the former WCW World Heavyweight champion.

Goldberg dominated in a match that took under two minutes to complete. WWE shared an image of Goldberg celebrating:

Bleacher Report's WWE Twitter account gave Goldberg a new nickname:

Considering the match resembled more of a squash than epic battle between two legends, the reaction was one of shock. Bleacher Report's Ryan Dilbert put it bluntly:

Scott Fishman of the Miami Herald was in awe of the result, just like one memorable fan a few years ago:

Sirius Radio host Sam Roberts liked the ending and wonders what the result means moving forward:

Adam Blampied of What Culture is convinced WWE will build off Sunday's result:

Wrestle Zone wondered if the length of the match was something that had to be done:

However, it appears as if Goldberg will be back in a WWE ring soon. According to James McKenna of ProWrestlingSheet, Goldberg made a deal with WWE earlier this week to appear in a match at January's Royal Rumble PPV.

Goldberg's name has often been mentioned for a potential WWE return over the years, but it didn't become a real possibility until the announcement of WWE 2K17. The 49-year-old Superstar was named a special downloadable character, while The Beast Incarnate was utilized as the cover athlete.

When Goldberg's involvement was revealed in a special commercial that first aired during Raw, hints were dropped about a potential rematch between two of the most dominant forces in the history of professional wrestling.

Tensions got even higher when Paul Heyman appeared on Raw and challenged Goldberg to a fight on behalf of his client.

That led to Goldberg's official WWE return on Raw, and after some contemplation, he accepted Lesnar's challenge, which set the stage for their Survivor Series encounter.

Over the course of several weeks leading up to the pay-per-view, the combatants made appearances on Raw and built up the anticipation for their titanic clash.

With Goldberg attempting to play the role of a real-life superhero, Heyman did everything he could to turn the fans against him, as evidenced by this tweet, courtesy of WWE Universe:

Goldberg's efforts didn't always work since The Conqueror is such a popular figure, but Goldberg undoubtedly got more people on his side with each passing appearance.

That was especially true on the Halloween edition of Raw, when he let his fists do the talking by hitting Rusev with a Jackhammer.

In addition to that, the former holder of "The Streak" got physical with Lesnar's advocate, as seen in this GIF from WWE's official Twitter account:

Lesnar and Goldberg finally had a face-to-face confrontation on the go-home episode of Raw prior to Survivor Series, which raised tensions to an all-time high.

While the decision to have Lesnar face Goldberg at Survivor Series was met with excitement by many, there was also plenty of skepticism since their match at WrestleMania XX was a major letdown.

Much of that had to do with the fact the fans knew both Superstars were leaving WWE after the bout. Lesnar and Goldberg had plenty to atone for Sunday.

Few expected a technical masterpiece, as both Superstars are best known as brawlers, and it's doubtful that many wanted a chain-wrestling clinic.

Regardless of how Goldberg is going to be booked leading up to the Royal Rumble, the result was somewhat surprising since Lesnar likely has a longer WWE run ahead of him.

Due to everything he has accomplished both in the ring and in the Octagon, however, Lesnar's credibility remains intact, and he should have little issue bouncing back from Sunday's defeat.
