Mesut Ozil Goal Commented on by Arsene Wenger After Ludogorets vs. Arsenal

Rory MarsdenNov 2, 2016

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was worried Mesut Ozil had missed the chance to score the team's 87th-minute winner against Ludogorets in the Champions League on Tuesday, but he praised the German's decision-making.

The Frenchman conceded it would have been simpler for Ozil to have shot and scored earlier than he did but added his playmaker proved he had the skill to score anyway.

During a frantic UEFA Champions League match, Ozil kept remarkably cool after lobbing the goalkeeper to seal a 3-2 comeback win for Arsenal against the Bulgarian outfit and booked his side's place in the last 16, per BT Sport Football:

Wenger explained how he saw the goal after an impressive victory at the Vasil Levski National Stadium, per Adrian Kajumba in the Mirror"Great players make the right decisions. They take the optimum solution. To me, [at first] it didn’t look like the optimum solution—you wanted him to take the chance earlier. But he had enough skill to prove he was right. When the ball was in the back of the net, it was clear it had been the optimum solution."

Arsenal surprisingly went 2-0 down inside 15 minutes against Ludogorets, but goals from Granit Xhaka and Oliver Giroud saw them level before the break.

Ozil's winner came three minutes from time and Arsenal are now top of Group A after four matches, tied on 10 points with Paris Saint-Germain.

It was Ozil's fourth Champions League goal of 2016-17 after he netted a hat-trick against Ludogorets in Arsenal's 6-0 win at the Emirates Stadium last month.

Wenger wasn't the only Arsenal man impressed with Ozil's strike, Hector Bellerin paid his own tribute on Twitter:

Arsenal are now 15 matches unbeaten in all competitions, 12 of which they have won.

Wenger praised his side's spirit after they came back to claim a third Champions League win of the campaign, per Kajumba: "I give credit to the team spirit for that character. You get belief with positive results, and this shows a healthy mentality in the group. The two together come out in these kind of games."

Next up for the Gunners is a crucial north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday.

Depending on other results, Arsenal could go top of the Premier League if they get a result against Spurs at the Emirates Stadium.

Given the form of Ozil and Wenger's side overall, it would be no surprise to see them beat Tottenham at the weekend, especially with the boost of Tuesday's comeback victory.
