5 Steps Toward Greatness: 5 WaysThe Bills Can Salvage Their Season

Kevin LatackiOct 6, 2009

The Buffalo Bills are off to a poor start to their 2009 season.  They played with energy in their first 2 games, with a record of 1-1. Then everything has gone south from there and they are sitting at 1-3.

For the Bills to salvage there season they will need to play with more heart and more intensity than ever before.  They will need to take 5 key steps to have any chance for a winning season.

Step 1:  Give Trent Edwards time to throw.

I dont care if you are Tom Brady or Peyton Manning.  With a constantly collapsing O-line you will not be able to get the ball downfield and instead settle for 1 or 2 yard gains.  The tackles (granted they are back-ups due to injury right now).  Need to play better.  They need to give Edwards one or two more seconds in the pocket and our record will show it

Step 2:  Keep Fred Jackson as a starter

Im one who used to see Lynch as a dominant back.  I thought that he was the offense, and he continued to show it last year.  And I also thought Fred Jackson was great, as a backup, and then he showed us what he could do in the final game in 2008 against the Patriots.  Then Lynch got suspended and Fred Jackson showed what he could do with multiple starts.  He was one of the top running backs in the NFL.  He gave our defense a strong playmaker in the passing game as well as running game (Lynch is a nice pass catcher as well).  But Jackson plays the game as if he is fighting for his NFL life every game.  And the numbers have proved it.  So why take out Jackson if the offense was doing good with him in it (Jauron should know that continuity is a good thing, seeing as thats the only reason he still has a job).  Maybe bring Lynch into even carries later than sooner.

Step 3:  Blitz with our Linebackers more often

We have 3 fast linebackers, and a host of back-ups with similar skill sets.  Bring them in more Blitz packages.  Kawika Mitchell is a great playmaker.  He has great hands and is a larger Linebacker who has a small linebackers speed.  This would also collapse the pocket quicker and let our great secondary  make plays on the ball.

Step 4:  Play tight coverage

I'm sure I wasn't the only one getting angry at the fact that Mckelvin(now on IR) and Mcgee were playing 10 yards deep on Moss and Welker.  And watching Moss and Brady go down the field in 2 minutes like it was nothing.  Playing tight coverage will reduce the effective of those slants that teams seem to demolish the defense with.  And will also allow the cornerbacks to jam wide receivers at the line of scrimmage, disrupting their route running.

Step 5: Get Healthy...and fast

This is common sense, but I feel a large majority of the problems on defense and offense are caused by our numerous injuries. As posted in my article here http://bleacherreport.com/articles/266376-depth-at-a-position-how-injuries-can-cost-a-season.  But the entire situation of the injuries has depleted our entire secondary and our offense is using 3rd string players(who got beat by Wake in the Miami game..AKA Kirk Chambers)  and our back-up right tackle was moved to LT because of injuries.

These are my 5 steps that I assure you would make the Bills a stronger team. And correct some of the problems that the team has been running into this season.  If you have any opinions please comment, I dont mind if you disagree with my assessments.
