Frank de Boer, Inter Milan Part Ways: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Inter Milan have sacked manager Frank de Boer after just 14 games in charge, it was confirmed on Tuesday.

News of the Dutchman's dismissal came via a statement on the club's official website. "Inter would like to place on record its thanks to Frank and his coaching team for their work with the Club over the past months and wishes them the best for the future," read a section of the bulletin.

De Boer released his own statement on social media, too. "Too bad it ended like this," he said on the Twitter feed he shares with his brother, Ronald, per Football Italia. "This project needed more time to be carried out. I want to thank all the fans for all the support you’ve given me over these months."

According to Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Football Italia), the 46-year-old was sacked by the club's Chinese owners via a Skype conversation.

Stefano Vecchi, the club's youth team coach, is set to take temporary charge, with the Nerazzurri facing Southampton in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday.

Even though De Boer was in the job for only 84 days, David Amoyal of ESPN FC feels as though the right decision has been made:

De Boer was appointed to replace Roberto Mancini in August after six successful years at Ajax, where he won four league titles.

However, the former defender was unable to get any consistency out of the Milan giants, who are in 12th place in Serie A after 11 games. De Boer’s final game in charge was the 1-0 loss to Sampdoria on Sunday.

Although Inter did beat Italian champions Juventus earlier in the campaign, the Dutchman’s tenure was a nightmare. Per sports journalist Jack Rathborn, the decision to appoint De Boer in the first place did seem to be a strange one:

Nevertheless, there were big things expected of the team this term. Inter spent major money to sign players like Joao Mario, Gabriel Barbosa, Antonio Candreva and Ever Banega in the summer window, although De Boer was unable to find the right formula to accommodate this clutch of attacking talent.

Naturally, the search now begins for his successor, and it's clear that whoever does step in at the San Siro has a big job on his hands. According to Gazzetta, former Lazio boss Stefano Pioli is among the favourites to take charge.

Amoyal believes Inter should make an ambitious play for Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone at the end of the campaign:

The job at the San Siro was always going to be a tough one for De Boer, who never managed or played in Serie A during his illustrious career. However, his game plans and decision-making left much to be desired, meaning it’s little surprise the club took decisive action.

Inter need to be more considered with their next appointment and look to formulate a long-term vision to accompany their lavish spending.
