The Montreal Canadiens are in talks with the free agent defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron.

Bergeron, who played last season with the Minnesota Wild, scored 14 goals (seven on the power play) and added 18 assists in 2008-09.

Bergeron's career started with the Edmonton Oilers in 2001. He has also played for the New York Islanders, Anaheim Ducks and, most recently, the Wild.

Bergeron's reputation definitely precedes him as being a fast-skating defenseman with a knack for end-to-end rushes. His other accomplishments in the NHL include back-to-back victories in the hardest shot competition.

Bergeron has been traded three times in his career. The first came in 2007 when he was traded to the Islanders with a third-round draft pick for Denis Grebeshkov.

The second came in February 2008, when he was traded to the Ducks for a third-round draft pick.

The last and most recent trade came on June 10, 2008, when he was acquired by the Wild for a third-round draft pick.

In 339 NHL games, Bergeron has 62 goals and 98 assists for a total of 160 points. Bergeron has had 24 postseason appearances, with six points split evenly between goals and assists.
