Manny Pacquiao dropped Jessie Vargas in the second round and outfought him over the distance to capture a unanimous decision and the WBO Welterweight Championship in an entertaining fight on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Scores were 114-113, 118-109 and 118-109 for Pacquiao.

Pacquiao (59-6-2, 38 KO) came out of the gate aggressive and tried to neutralize Vargas' significant size advantage by overwhelming him with activity. He scored a flash knockdown in the second round with a straight left hand that deposited the now-former champion on the seat of his pants.

It looked closer to vintage Pac Man than we've seen in quite a while.

Vargas (27-2, 10 KO) rebounded from the knockdown and gave a good account of his toughness. He was just a little too reluctant to pull the trigger at times and didn't seem to get much in the way of return when he did land a big power shot.

Pacquiao, who briefly retired in April and currently serves as a senator in his native Philippines, was just too fast, strong and experienced for his younger foe.
