Jarvis Landry Reportedly Fined for Illegal Hit on Aaron Williams

Rob GoldbergOct 27, 2016

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jarvis Landry has been fined $24,309 for his block on Buffalo Bills safety Aaron Williams, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Thursday.

The excessive hit came during the team's Week 7 game, which the Dolphins won 28-25. Landry was penalized for unnecessary roughness on the play but was not ejected.

"It is certainly a foul," NFL vice president of officiating Dean Blandino said Tuesday, per Jeremy Bergman of NFL.com. "It is certainly something that we'll review for potential discipline, but it's still a football play, and it's tough to read intent there. That's why the officials kept him in the game."

Mike Pereira of Fox Sports provided his thoughts while breaking down the play:

Williams exited the game, and there is concern about potential long-term issues for his neck, per Chris Brown of the team's official website. The 26-year-old, who missed most of the 2015 season with head and neck injuries, underwent neck fusion surgery in the offseason.

ESPN's Adam Schefter provided the latest update on the safety:

Meanwhile, Landry apologized to Williams for the hit and said he wishes he could take it back, according to Steven Wine of the Associated Press. However, he maintained that it was not a dirty play.

"Call it what you want," Landry said. "It's football."

According to Pro Football Talk, the Dolphins receiver hadn't received notice of a fine as of Thursday afternoon, but the NFL has reportedly followed through with the punishment.
