Tom SunderlandOct 26, 2016

Kei Nishikori became the first player to progress to the quarter-finals of the 2016 Swiss Indoors on Wednesday after beating Paolo Lorenzi in straight sets, 7-6 (3), 6-2.

The tournament's No. 3 seed didn't concede a single break of serve throughout the fixture—including the first-set tiebreak—and built on an impressive opener before downing his Italian foe in some style. Juan Martin del Potro also advanced after ousting Robin Haase from the running with a 6-3, 6-4 win.

American Jack Sock kept his hopes of winning in Basel, Switzerland, alive by dominating France's Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 6-3, while seventh-seeded Richard Gasquet was forced to retire in the second set of his clash against Guido Pella.

Recap

After spending three weeks on the sidelines with an injury, Nishikori continued his winning return to the court on Wednesday, notching a confident 7-6 (3), 6-2 victory over Lorenzi in one hour, 40 minutes.

The Japanese contender trailed his Italian opponent for a grand total of one game over the course of the entire match, and TennisTV showed Nishikori had the gumption to showcase a little bit of flair:

He wasn't the only one in firing form in front of the Basel crowd on Wednesday, however, as Sock waltzed his way to a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Mannarino, needing only an hour to ease into the second round.

There, Sock will face off against Marcel Granollers, who defeated Henri Laaksonen on Tuesday to advance.

Sock took to Instagram to celebrate a rudimentary triumph:

Zverev kept up the trend of straight-sets wins by preventing Fritz from joining his compatriot in the second round with a 7-6 (3), 6-0 victory, getting the better of his 18-year-old foe with relative ease.

Pella's outing was also easier than expected, as Gasquet retired in the second set of their clash.

Tennis writer Rene Denfeld noted the Frenchman showed some signs of an injury concern:

Verdasco was shown the Swiss Indoors exit by Carreno, who won the last three games of the first set in succession to stage an audacious comeback result.

And del Potro's win over Haase also required no small amount of fortitude, namely in the second set, where he returned from deficits of two games and three games to progress, per Portuguese journalist jose Morgado:

Del Potro will line up against Belgium's David Goffin in the second round, while Carreno will clash against No. 4 seed Marin Cilic, and Zverev will meet Argentina's Pella.

Federico Delbonis also made his way into the Swiss Indoors quarter-finals after he beat Ricardas Berankis 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 6-3, coming back from a set down to edge a tight final fixture of the Wednesday schedule.
