Derek Anderson Back To His Old Ways

Andrew McNultyOct 5, 2009

Well, after a rough four weeks the Cleveland Browns look like a team that is on the verge of winning.

Maybe.

After playing the worst football of any team this season, it looks like the Browns may have found something to focus on as they go forward. Mangini wants to and desperately needs his first win. That is why he made the switch at Quarterback.

The Browns are lucky that they have a guy who can be successful in this system and it's not Brady Quinn. They have once again found the arm of Derek Anderson. Now Anderson probably will not be in Hawaii by the end of the season, but the Browns starter looks to build on his performance from last week.

Last weeks lose to the Bengals is yet another loss in the winless Mangini regime. Yet it's something that the Browns as a team can looks at and improve on. The Browns offense looked like it belonged in the NFL on Sunday. Anderson made some good and bad passes in Sundays effort but he should walk away from this game with his head held high.

In his first start of the season, he was 26-48 with an touchdown and an interception.  Classic Derek Anderson. Anderson may not be a fan favorite but he spreads the field in a way that Brady Quinn can't. He has a dynamic arm that allows him to spread the defense thin and split the safeties. With Cincinnatti's defense doubling Braylon Edwards, he was able to light up Muhammad Massoquoi for eight receptions and 148 yards. With the playmaking ability of Anderson, the Browns are in the best position to win.

They have a realistic chance of beating the Bills this week if Anderson is able to make smart decisions around the goal line. Many have criticized him this week for throwing the interception on the goal line or missing open receivers. The problem with this is that he hasn't had time to gel with his receivers like Brady did. If we give him a couple of games to get comfortable, I think that we'll see the Derek Anderson of old.

In the end, Mangini wants to put his ball club in the best position to win, and that's with the arm of Derek Anderson.
