Duke Unveils 'Battleship Grey' Helmets Honoring 1942 Rose Bowl Team

The Duke Blue Devils will commemorate their last Rose Bowl appearance by wearing "Battleship Grey" helmets on Nov. 5.

Because of the bombing of Pearl Harbor weeks before the 1942 Rose Bowl, the prestigious college football game moved away from the West Coast to Durham, North Carolina. Despite gaining home-field advantage, Duke lost to Oregon State, 20-16.

To celebrate the 75-year anniversary, Duke will face Virginia Tech in two weeks with special grey helmets. The pitchfork-wielding demon looks more like a blue devil than the ordinary logo.

This is another case where a commemorative design tops the team's normal look.
