Why the Oregon State Beavers can cover the spread
Oregon State is only 2-4 SU this season but 4-2 ATS after taking a tough 19-14 loss to Utah last week but covering as a seven-point home dog. The Beavers trailed the Utes 12-0 at the half, and they pulled to within 19-14 with just under two minutes to go and got the ball back before succumbing. On the afternoon, playing in wind and rain, Utah outgained Oregon State by a slight 317-297 margin.
The Beavers didn't exactly help themselves last week, taking a safety on a blown punt snap, missing two field goals, including a 27-yarder, and losing a fumble inside their own red zone leading to a late Utah touchdown. Without a couple of those plays, things might have been much more interesting.
Two weeks ago, Oregon State upset Cal 47-44, outgaining the Bears by 118 yards. So the Beavers have actually outgained three of their six opponents this season.
Why the Washington Huskies can cover the spread
Washington is 6-0 SU, 4-2 ATS and well-rested coming off its bye week after destroying Oregon two weeks ago 70-21, easily covering as a 10-point favorite. The Huskies pounced out to a 21-0 first-quarter lead, led 35-7 at the half and didn't let up, taking out 12 years of frustration against the Ducks with 35 second-half points. They posted their highest scoring total since World War II.
On the night, Washington racked up 682 yards of offense, including 378 yards on the ground, as running back Myles Gaskin came up with his second straight 100-yard performance. Meanwhile, quarterback Jake Browning threw six touchdown passes and ran for two more scores.
The week prior to that, the Huskies bombed Stanford 44-6, covering at four points. So that's 114 points in two games against two teams Washington needed to beat to win the Pac-12 North.
Smart pick
Barring a minor miracle, the Huskies are going to win this game—the only detail is the final margin. But while that spread is certainly stiff, Oregon State is down its top two quarterbacks and going against the seventh-ranked scoring defense in the country. Also, Washington won this matchup last season 52-7. The smart money here runs with the Huskies.
