Why the Oklahoma Sooners can cover the spread
Following a 1-2 start to this season, Oklahoma has now won three games in a row, including a 38-17 decision over Kansas State last week. The Sooners led 14-0 nine minutes into the game, and 24-10 at halftime. They later iced the victory and the cover as 14-point favorites on an 88-yard Baker Mayfield-to-Dede Westbrook touchdown pass with just over six-and-a-half minutes to go.
On the day, Oklahoma outgained the Wildcats, 510-335, as Mayfield threw for 346 yards and four touchdowns. Meanwhile, a Sooners defense that had allowed three straight opponents to hit the 40-point mark held Kansas State to just one touchdown per half and just 110 total rushing yards.
Two weeks ago, Oklahoma put up 45 points in a win over Texas, and just before that, they scored 52 in a victory at TCU. Despite falling out of contention for a spot in the College Football Playoff, the Sooners would still like to win another conference title.
Why the Texas Tech Red Raiders can cover the spread
The Raiders went 3-1 to start the season but have since lost two straight after laying an egg in a 48-17 home defeat against West Virginia last week. In the process, Texas Tech had a streak of nine straight home games with 50 or more points snapped.
The Red Raiders only trailed the Mountaineers by a field goal after one quarter, and they had early chances. But one drive ended on a pick inside the West Virginia red zone, and another ended on downs just outside the red zone. From there, things just went downhill.
Two weeks ago, Texas Tech battled Kansas State to a 31-31 tie through three quarters in Manhattan before fading in a 44-38 loss. Prior to that, the Red Raiders had scored at least 55 points in each of their first four games.
Smart pick
Texas Tech might put up a few points, but can they stop anybody? Oklahoma put up 63 on the Red Raiders last season, and the way things are going, something similar could happen Saturday night. Plus, playing on the road means the spread is a little friendlier toward Oklahoma. The smart money in this spot at sports betting sites sides with the Sooners.
