The Dallas Stars open their season Thursday night and will wear a helmet decal to honor the five police officers who died during a protest against police brutality.

On July 7, a gunman shot and killed officers Lorne Ahrens, Michael Krol, Michael Smith, Brent Thompson and Patrick Zamarripa in Dallas. The NHL squad will pay tribute by wearing silver decals with the badges and names of the victims.

The Stars open the season at home against the Anaheim Ducks.

Two months ago, the NFL denied the Dallas Cowboys' request to wear an "Arm in Arm" logo to honor the officers this season.
