No. 1 Overall Pick Auston Matthews Scores Hat Trick in NHL Debut

Zac WassinkOct 12, 2016

The Toronto Maple Leafs selected Auston Matthews with the first overall pick of the 2016 NHL draft. He made quite the debut Wednesday night.

During the team's regular-season opener against the Ottawa Senators, the rookie center scored a pair of goals in his first-ever period as a pro.

His first tally occurred when he drove the puck home from the doorstep with under 12 minutes to play in the first period (seen above). His second came as the result of a tremendous solo effort:

Matthews made history in the process, per Elias Sports Bureau (via ESPN Stats & Info):

The first intermission apparently only added fuel to the 19-year-old, as he hit the back of the net to complete his hat trick 1:25 into the second period:

Update: Matthews scored a fourth goal in the closing seconds of the second period to add his name to the record books once again:
