Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Rumours on Matteo Darmian and Toni Kroos

Tom SunderlandOct 12, 2016

Barcelona and Juventus have reportedly entered the race for out-of-favour Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian in January. Meanwhile, Toni Kroos has ended any chance of a move to Old Trafford after signing a new deal with Real Madrid.

Spanish newspaper El Mundo Deportivo (h/t Bruce Archer of the Daily Express) reported Barca manager Luis Enrique is looking into the possibility of signing Darmian as he seeks a new option at right-back.

Midfielder Sergi Roberto has been lining up on the right side of defence following Dani Alves' summer switch to Juventus, but Darmian would offer a more specialised presence in the role.

Darmian has also been heavily linked with a move to Inter Milan, but Italian broadcaster SportMediaset (h/t Football Italia) reported Juve are now in the hunt and will offer the 26-year-old another route back to Serie A.

The Italy international has featured just once under Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho this season and doesn't appear to figure prominently in the Portuguese's plans, with Antonio Valencia currently in fine form.

United also have youngster Timothy Fosu-Mensah coming through their ranks, and Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News has the Dutchman ahead of Darmian in the right-back hierarchy:

Barcelona also have former Sevilla star Aleix Vidal among their ranks, but Catalunya Radio show Tot Costa (h/t Sport) reported it looks likely the right-sided specialist will leave the Camp Nou this winter.

Darmian arrived at Old Trafford from Torino last year and initially impressed under Mourinho's predecessor, Louis van Gaal, but the defender's agent, Fausto Pari, told Radio CRC (h/t Sky Sports) his client could leave in the winter:

"

He's playing little or nothing and it's a shame because he's an Italy international. If the situation doesn't change by January, we'll have to think of something. He risks also losing his place in the national team.

We've got to see what United want to do. Italian clubs have tried [to sign him], but United closed the door immediately.

"

Elsewhere, Kroos has ended any chance of a move to United after Real Madrid confirmed via their official website that the midfielder has agreed a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2022.

Spanish newspaper AS detailed that the €20 million-per-year (£18 million-per-year) contract makes him the highest-paid German player in history, while the Sun's Stefan Bienkowski saw the deal as a declaration of Kroos' importance to Real:

The World Cup winner was previously linked to the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City, as reported by Fichajes and the Daily Mirror respectively (h/t the Daily Express and Shoot).

United may have dreamed of luring the player in the future, but after handing their star a six-year commitment worth upwards of £345,000 per week, the English giants have been forced to concede defeat for the time being.
