Leonardo Bonucci, Juventus Agree on New Contract: Latest Details and Reaction

Rory MarsdenDec 19, 2016

Leonardo Bonucci extended his stay with Juventus by a year on Monday, effectively putting to bed ongoing rumours linking the centre-back with a move to Chelsea.

The club confirmed the news of the 29-year-old's new deal on Twitter. It will keep him with the Serie A giants until 2021:

Bonucci's previous contract was set to run until 2020, but Juve have moved to extend his terms as he continues to be one of the most vital parts of manager Massimiliano Allegri's squad.

Bleacher Report UK's Adam Digby and sports journalist Jack Rathborn hailed the news:

Per Matt Law of the Telegraph, Chelsea were prepared to spend a world-record transfer fee for a defender in an attempt to lure Bonucci to Stamford Bridge, where he could have reunited with former Juve boss Antonio Conte. But he has now extended his commitment to the Old Lady.

Italy international Bonucci joined Juve in 2010 and has since established himself as part of arguably the best defensive line in the world alongside Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Barzagli.

He has won five consecutive Serie A titles with the club, two Coppa Italias and was part of the Juventus side that made it to the 2014-15 UEFA Champions League final, in which they lost 3-1 to Barcelona.

Bonucci is in the prime of his career and will likely remain a key asset for Juventus deep into his 30s.

Intelligent and experienced defensively, Bonucci is fantastic with the ball at his feet and plays a key role in starting Juventus attacks. He also contributes while the opposition have possession.

He has been a consistent presence for the Turin giants ever since he joined the club, making at least 30 Serie A appearances in each of his full seasons with Juve, per WhoScored.com.

It will be a huge boost to both Bonucci and Juventus that he has committed his future to the club again, and rumours of any potential departure should now end for good.

Per Gianluca Di Marzio's David Amoyal, the Bianconeri will now turn their attention to Paulo Dybala's contract:

Juve are laying the foundations of keeping an excellent side together for the foreseeable future, which will help them continue to dominate Italian football for years to come.
