Why Stan Kwan Must Go!
The Lions will never be a competitive football team until the Special Teams coach is replaced. I was surprised that Kwan was not replaced when Schwartz took over.
I wonder how much input Schwartz has regarding personnel and schemes on the unit, I would think that the majority of those decisions are made by Kwan since he is the Special Teams Coach.
Good Special Teams players are a different animal (not to say that the players are similar to animals) they are a different breed, they have to like to give up their bodies on every play, they need to be full of energy, they need to be tough and last but not least, they need to be smart.
I didn't see much fire, toughness or basic football smarts in the group we saw yesterday, they were uninspired and undisciplined. Now some will say, that you cannot blame all of this on the Coach, perhaps he does not have the players or the talent, I respectfully disagree, these guys should know how to tackle, shouldn't they? They should know how to fight off blocks, instead of "chicken fighting" with opponents, they should know how to stay in their assigned lanes.
The great Special Teams units take on the personality of thier coach, they need someone who will "get in thier face when needed". I don't know Kwan personally, but he certainly is not the type of coach who is going to get in anyones face. We also do not have a leader on this unit, we need a player who will energize this unit.
I see a bunch of guys who simply run down the field with no purpose, no plan, no toughness. On the Knox return, the Bears simply screened people out, there was no "fighting" off of blocks, no sense of urgency and not one person willing to give their body up.
The Lions need to address this situation immediately by elevating Zach Follett from the practice squad. He will bring a sense of urgency, he will energize the other players and the fans and he will "blow people up" as he did in the two pre-season games he was able to get in. There are any number of players he can take the place of, what about Darnell Bing, what exactly has he done lately?
Schwartz had said that all of these players, (well we all know he really doesn't mean all) are on a week to week scholarship, that should also apply to coaches, if people are not getting the job done, they need to be replaced.
