San Diego Chargers star Jason Verrett expects to undergo season-ending surgery after suffering a partially torn ACL.

Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune quoted the third-year cornerback announcing the news Wednesday:

Chargers CB Jason Verrett said he expects to undergo surgery on partially torn ACL. "My season is done with."

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Verrett played through the injury in San Diego's past two games.

The former first-round pick played in just six games during his rookie season, but he exploded with 47 tackles, three interceptions, 12 pass deflections and one defensive touchdown over 14 contests in 2015. His coverage skills also helped him reach the Pro Bowl for the first time.

Entering the 2016 season, Nathan Jahnke of Pro Football Focus predicted Verrett would be the best outside cornerback in the NFL. "On a per-play basis, no outside cornerback has been better than Verrett over the course of the last two years."

While he had a solid start to the season, it will end sooner than anyone hoped.

Injuries remain a problem for the 25-year-old, who will have played in only 24 of 48 regular-season games through his first three years in the league.

San Diego has an experienced replacement in Brandon Flowers, although he has been out since suffering a concussion in Week 3, per Gehlken. Former Green Bay Packers cornerback Casey Hayward should also play a major role in the secondary going forward, along with Craig Mager and Pierre Desir.

Even with solid depth, the Chargers defense will suffer without arguably its best player.
