Barcelona Transfer News: Luis Suarez Contract to Match Neymar, Latest Rumours

Gianni VerschuerenOct 5, 2016

Barcelona are reportedly working on a contract extension for star forward Luis Suarez, handing him the same £272,000-a-week deal team-mate Neymar is currently on and ensuring he doesn't leave the club anytime soon.

That's according to both Sport and Mundo Deportivo (h/t MailOnline's Ben Grounds), the two leading sports outlets in Catalonia. It's noted his current deal will be extended by one year, until 2020, and a cool £100,000 will be added to his weekly wages.

The former Liverpool man has been a rousing success since joining the Blaugrana, forming a devastating attacking trio with Neymar and Lionel Messi. He made the move to Catalonia in 2014 and has already won two La Liga titles and a UEFA Champions League in the short span since.

Suarez is widely considered one of the best pure strikers in the world, but he has also flashed his versatility at the Camp Nou, moving out wide and cutting inside from the right wing on occasions. The 29-year-old is always moving, creating plenty of space for Messi and Neymar.

Last season, he finished as the team's and La Liga's top scorer with 40 goals—14 more than Messi and 16 more than Neymar. The scoring output once again highlighted his importance to the team, and it's no surprise the Catalans are set to reward him with a contract that would pay him the same as the Brazilian.

Here's a look at some of Suarez's highlights:

All three members of Barcelona's attacking trident have yet to turn 30 years old, and they're expected to continue their domination for years to come. But rumours the Catalans are already looking at the future have started to emerge of late, usually centering around Juventus star Paulo Dybala.

Per Ben Spratt for Goal, the Argentinian has dismissed the rumours, saying a move to Barcelona makes no sense and he's set for a contract renewal of his own, but given his obvious talent and playing style, speculation will undoubtedly persist.

The 22-year-old is remarkably similar to Messi as far as his playing style goes―he times his runs in almost exactly the same way and loves to pop up in similar places. Naturally, that would make him a superb target for the Catalans, who can be confident regarding his ability to quickly find his footing at the Camp Nou.

Here's a look at what the Juventus ace can do:

It makes little sense to spend a ton of money on Dybala if Suarez, Messi and Neymar are around, however, and locking the Uruguayan up to a new deal is a smart move. There is little risk of Suarez leaving the club in the near future, but increasing his wages will help keep him happy and minimises the doubt even more.
