Why the Jets can cover the spread

The key to New York's success begins with quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. The 11-year veteran has tossed nine picks over the past two weeks but is equally capable of dominating a game, as evidenced by his 374-yard performance in the Jets' 37-31 win in Buffalo three weeks ago.

That's good news, as the Jets prepare to face Pittsburgh's 30th-ranked pass defense, which has allowed over 316 yards per game this season. The Jets have also been effective at defending against the rush, holding opponents to 86 or fewer ground yards per game.

Why the Steelers can cover the spread

Ben Roethlisberger threw five touchdown passes last week against the Chiefs and has now found the end zone an incredible 18 times during the Steelers' current home winning streak while tossing just one pick in his last two outings.

The Steelers add an important offensive dynamic with the return of Le'Veon Bell, who gained over 100 second-half yards last week, eating up valuable clock and denying the Chiefs the chance to mount a comeback.

The Pittsburgh defense has allowed just two rushing touchdowns in its past eight home dates, which bodes well against a Jets offense that has run for a score in just two of its past six outings.

Smart pick

This is a clash of teams headed in different directions. While the Jets have imploded with Fitzpatrick under center, Big Ben has found an extra gear and enjoys offensive options in the air and on the ground. Look for the Steelers to extend both their home winning streak and the Jets' current misery with another statement SU and ATS win.

Betting trends

The Jets are 1-7 SU in their last eight games on the road against the Steelers.

The Steelers are 4-0-1 ATS in their last five games as home favorites.
