Why the LSU Tigers can cover the spread

The Bayou Bengals bounced back from the loss to Auburn that cost head coach Les Miles and offensive coordinator Cam Cameron their jobs to beat Missouri last week 42-7.

In their first game under interim coach Ed Orgeron, and with running back Leonard Fournette on the sidelines with an ankle injury, the Tigers jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead on three Derrius Guice touchdown runs. LSU pushed that to 35-0 early in the fourth quarter on its way to a cover as a 12-point favorite.

On the night the Tigers racked up 634 yards of offense, a new school record for SEC competition, rushing for 418 as both Guice and Darrel Williams hit the century mark and ran for three scores. Meanwhile, the LSU defense held Mizzou to just 265 yards and out of the end zone until just six minutes remained in the game.

If the talented Tigers can carry on with the enthusiasm they showed last week they'll be tough from here on out.

Why the Florida Gators can cover the spread

It wasn't exactly pretty, but the Gators rebounded from their disheartening defeat to Tennessee two weeks ago for a 13-6 victory at Vanderbilt last week. Florida grabbed the first lead on a short Jordan Scarlett touchdown run midway through the second quarter before allowing the Commodores to get within 10-6 midway through the third. However, it added a field goal and held on from there.

The Gators had a chance to cover the spread as 13-point favorites but quarterback Austin Appleby fumbled the ball away at the Vandy 1-yard line with just three minutes to go.

Florida only came up with 236 yards of offense on the day, but limited Vanderbilt to 265 and won the turnover battle 3-1. That Gators defense has now held three of four opponents this season to seven points or less.

Smart pick

LSU looked rejuvenated last week, flying around the field and having fun, and Fournette might be back. Take the Tigers here.
