NFL Power Rankings Week 5: Division Standings and Latest 2016-17 Super Bowl Odds

Chris RolingOct 3, 2016

The Pittsburgh Steelers showed over the weekend what confidence in a team could do.

For bettors playing against the house when it comes to Super Bowl odds, the Steelers made for an interesting play before the season but were one of many. Then Sunday Night Football in Week 4 happened—the Steelers walloped the Kansas City Chiefs 43-14 in front of a national audience.

All bets are off. Pittsburgh has not only shot up the power rankings and altered league hierarchy in dramatic fashion, but the house has shifted to protect itself.

Time to Panic: Carolina Panthers (25-1)

Unlike the Steelers, the Carolina Panthers are a former favorite not even close to living up to the hype.

Cam Newton and the Panthers now sit on a 1-3 record after taking a 48-33 beating from the Atlanta Falcons over the weekend, which included the star quarterback suffering a concussion, confirmed by Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer.

It was easy to enter the season backing the Panthers at a lesser payout than the one listed above after last year's deep postseason run and the fact the offense would return a weapon such as Kelvin Benjamin.

The opposite has happened. Carolina lost corner Josh Norman, has already allowed 13 sacks of Newton and just coughed up more than 500 yards passing to Atlanta, including 300 receiving yards and a score to Julio Jones.

Not that the Panthers have hit the alarm button.

"Our guys are going to rebound from this," Carolina linebacker Luke Kuechly said, according to ESPN.com. "I know they will. They're a resilient bunch. We take a lot of pride in what we do. We'll come out better next week."

Still, the Panthers have looked less competitive by the week and face an uncertain future under center heading into a tricky stretch that reads Tampa Bay, New Orleans and Arizona. The payout here looks good, but Carolina hasn't shown enough signs of life to make it worthwhile.

Notable Odds Swing: Philadelphia Eagles (20-1)

Thanks to a new head coach and trotting out a rookie under center, the Philadelphia Eagles started the season at 60-1 or worse odds.

Kudos to those who rolled the dice.

Oddsmakers have put their hands up defensively faster than a boxer in the ring with Floyd Mayweather, making for one of the most dramatic shifts in odds to start the season. These uncertain Eagles look dominant now, sitting on a 3-0 mark through four weeks.

In fact, the biggest knock on the Eagles at this point might be the early bye. But from the looks of things, quarterback Carson Wentz (five touchdowns, no picks) and a defense yet to allow more than 14 points in a contest aren't going anywhere when it comes to consistency each week.

The NFC East won't come easy thanks to another rookie, though:

While the division doesn't look so simple, remember the Steelers from the intro? The Eagles stomped them 34-3 in Week 3, holding quarterback Ben Roethlisberger without a score and Pittsburgh rushers to a 2.9 yards-per-carry average.

Backed by what looks like one of the league's best defenses, Wentz can take the Eagles far this season. Bettors still shouldn't have any hesitation about riding with one of the league's most improved teams.

Worth the Risk: Oakland Raiders (33-1)

The Oakland Raiders are alive when it comes to the playoff conversation and have injected some new life into the AFC West standings.

Quarterback Derek Carr and the Raiders sit on a 3-1 record to start the season. Doubters will point out the trio of wins came against New Orleans, Tennessee and Baltimore—but try to keep in mind all three of those wins came away from home.

Impressive, and it means Oakland plays seven of its remaining games at home. The defense hasn't looked good (27 or more points allowed in three games), but Carr is downright electric at nine touchdowns to one interception, and Latavius Murray has rushed for 172 yards and a trio of scores on a 4.3 yards-per-carry average.

As ESPN Stats & Info pointed out, Carr is one of those quarterbacks bettors shouldn't hesitate to back:

Things won't come easy in the AFC West. The Denver Broncos still hold the torch, and the Chiefs could rebound. But Oakland still has easy games such as Tampa Bay, Indianapolis and Jacksonville on the schedule, not to mention the 1-3 San Diego Chargers twice. Keep in mind the Raiders took down the Broncos last season once, too.

If Oakland can keep rolling like this, Carr might lead a changing of the guard in the AFC West.
