Janikowski Breaks Record for Most Career 50-Yard Field Goals

Oakland Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski only attempted one field goal in a Week 3 win over the Tennessee Titans, but he made it count by taking sole possession of the NFL career record for most field goals of 50-plus yards, per ESPN Stats & Info.

His 52-yarder in the second quarter was his 53rd field goal from 50-plus in his career, breaking a tie with former Detroit Lions kicker Jason Hanson, who last played in 2012.

While no longer considered the NFL's preeminent distance placekicker, Janikowski has still proven capable of converting from a long way out, making five kicks from 50-plus yards since the beginning of last season.

However, even if he continues to add to his total in the coming years, it seems likely his record will eventually be broken. There are currently some young thunder-legs around the league, with some of those possessing better accuracy than Janikowski's.

Dallas Cowboys kicker Dan Bailey and Minnesota Vikings kicker Blair Walsh come to mind, but the biggest threat may come from Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker. Tucker is only 26 years old and has already made 21 field goals from beyond the 50-yard mark.

Quickly mounting an argument to be considered among the best at his position in league history, Tucker has displayed remarkable accuracy from distance, making 21 of his 33 50-plus yarders, even though many of those have come from well beyond the minimum threshold.

Tucker has also converted 38 of his 43 attempts from 40-49 yards, along with 80 of his 81 career attempts inside 40 yards.
