Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Rumours on Ruben Neves, Bernard Mensah

Gianni VerschuerenSep 26, 2016

Manchester United reportedly sent scouts to watch FC Porto take on Portuguese rivals Boavista, but summer target Ruben Neves didn't make an appearance for the Dragons. Meanwhile, United are again linked with Bernard Mensah of Atletico Madrid.

According to A Bola (h/t Calciomercato's Edo Dalmonte), the Red Devils, Manchester City and Juventus all sent scouts to watch Porto take on Boavista on Saturday, with a host of top prospects featuring for both sides.

Star midfielder Hector Herrera was the likely top target for most scouts, but United probably also wanted to cast their eye on Neves. The 19-year-old was said to be a target for the Red Devils and Liverpool during the summer, per DN Sports (h/t the Daily Express' Bruce Archer) after a fantastic two-year run with the Dragons.

Neves made his debut for Porto at the age of 17 and quickly became one of Europe's top rising stars in midfield. Last year, he donned the captain's armband for the very first time, in the UEFA Champions League match against Maccabi Tel-Aviv, the youngest to ever do so in that competition, per UEFA.com.

Here's a look at some of his highlights:

Neves hasn't been an automatic starter for Porto in the 2016-17 campaign, with the aforementioned Herrera running the show in midfield, but he remains one of the most exciting talents on the continent.

At the age of just 19, he already has bags of experience, and his range, passing and vision in midfield are impressive. He's a solid athlete who does an excellent job picking apart defences from a deep position, showing some similarities to City's Ilkay Gundogan with his passing.

He's a far better defender than the Germany international, however, and his potential is through the roof. FourFourTwo's Tom Kundert is a fan:

"

Neves oozes intelligence. His innate positional sense, ability to read the game and tactical awareness means he is always involved in the play and, like all great players, he seems to have more time on the ball than the mere mortals around him. He also possesses an acute awareness of what is needed at each particular moment, as well as flawless technique to solve every problem with the correct solution.

"

Neves would be an investment for the future, a player who already has the look of a future superstar and still has so much room to grow. The Red Devils have done excellent work with their young talents the last few years and already have an impressive young nucleus―adding Neves would make the future that much brighter.

Manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly looking at other youngsters as well. According to Toby Gannon of the Sun, United have been scouting former target Mensah, who is currently on loan with Vitoria Guimaraes from Atletico Madrid.

Vitoria SC's Ghanaian midfielder Bernard Mensah (R) celebrates with his teammates forward Tomane (C) and Cape Verdean forward Hernanihis after scoring during the Portuguese league football match Vitoria SC vs FC Porto at the Afonso Henriques Stadium in Gu

Mensah nearly joined the club in 2015 before picking the Rojiblancos but has yet to be given a chance with Atletico. He's represented by Jorge Mendes, the same agent who is close with Mourinho.

Here's a look at what the 21-year-old can do:

The Ghana international has impressive tools, standing out for his great pace and dribbling ability, but a lack of vision has held him back so far. His one-year loan deal with Getafe was a major disappointment, and he's fared little better with former club Vitoria Guimaraes.

If he's available next summer, it's most likely because Atletico have given up on the young speedster. Perhaps the Red Devils would have better luck developing Mensah, but so far, he has shown nothing that would suggest he has the quality to be a hit in the Premier League.
