Tyson Fury Won't Fight After Wladimir Klitschko Postponement, Says Eddie Hearn

Rory MarsdenSep 26, 2016

British boxing promoter Eddie Hearn does not believe heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury will ever fight again after he withdrew from his Oct. 29 rematch with Wladimir Klitschko, citing mental health problems.

The holder of the WBA and the WBO heavyweight belts was set to fight Klitschko, 40, next month in his first fight since he condemned the Ukrainian veteran to his first defeat in over a decade in November 2015.

After postponing the original rematch scheduled for July due to an injury, Fury, 28, could now call time on his career if he is stripped of his titles, according to Hearn, per BBC Sport's Ben Dirs:

Fury will be stripped of his titles and, after a legal battle, he'll say: "No more, I'm done."

It's going to be really messy and it might take a year to resolve. I know there are sensitivities around mental health issues but this is a business.

The governing bodies have had enough. The world heavyweight title is a huge part of their business and they've not made any money from it for a year.

"

Hearn is not Fury's promoter, but he does represent the United Kingdom's other current heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua, who holds the IBF title—the United States' Deontay Wilder is the WBC's current champion.

The 26-year-old has been on an incredible rise since winning a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics—his professional record currently stands at 17-0, with all of his victories coming via knockout—and he seems to be on a collision course to face either Fury or Klitschko next year, per BBC Radio 5 live's Steve Bunce.

The prospect of an all-British clash for Joshua with Fury now seems far less likely, but Hearn said that a bout with Klitschko could be organised for later in 2016, per Sky Sports News HQ:

Joshua is set to make his second defence of his IBF title at the Manchester Arena on Nov. 26, but an opponent has yet to be announced.

Per Dirs, Hearn admitted it is more likely that Joshua will fight New Zealand's mandatory challenger, Joseph Parker, but a huge bout against Klitschko has yet to be ruled out.

While Fury is sidelined—potentially indefinitely—Joshua and Klitschko are arguably the two biggest names in the heavyweight game.

Before losing to Fury last year, Klitschko had not been beaten since 2004, and he will be eager to reassert his dominance on the heavyweight division.

Joshua would be a big name to prove to the world that Klitschko still has what it takes to beat up-and-comers over 10 years his junior.

While it may be too much to ask for a fight between the two in 2016, a 2017 clash seems likely, especially if Fury remains out of the game.
