'WWE 2K17': Latest News and Buzz for Week of Sept. 26

Ryan DilbertSep 26, 2016

As the release date for WWE 2K17 nears, sights and sounds of the video game have emerged to whet fans' appetites.

Trailers, clips and other looks inside the upcoming WWE game showed off the additions developers have made this time around. NXT and Hall of Famers are poised to join the fun via downloadable content. WWE 2K17 also boasts a number of new painful holds and the chance to potentially become a "Paul Heyman Guy."

These tastes of the game suggest 2K is continuing to make strides with the series.

The impressive roster continues to grow. Developers keep making smart tweaks.

Soon enough, players will be able to get their hands on WWE 2K17 and see what the whole package looks like.  The game is set for release on Oct. 11 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.

Suplex City Tour

2K fully embraced the Suplex City concept in the game's latest trailer:

The camera takes the viewer into a gritty city where Sheamus waits with closed fists and Dean Ambrose is busy brawling in an alley. It's just the kind of slickly produced ad to get people talking.

While not as artistic as that trailer, the clip focusing on the game's MyCareer mode is the more newsworthy of the two.

In it, Brock Lesnar's advocate revealed some key details about the mode. Heyman mentioned the standard route one takes a custom wrestler is through the WWE Performance Center and NXT. However, one can bypass the developmental system thanks to an alliance with Heyman.

That option apparently will anger the WWE higher-ups. That would open up an additional narrative path for players, making the game deeper.

It looks as if Lesnar's status as the cover star has led to a boon for the game in the form of Heyman playing the devil sitting on one's shoulder.

Additional Glimpses, Tidbits

More moves will be available for crafting slobberknockers. On YouTube, the 2K development team revealed a plethora of new finishers for the game:

The video is extremely fast, but one can see Charlotte's Figure Eight, the Muta Lock and Sasha Banks' knees to the gut in action. These holds and attacks will help players round out their custom wrestlers' arsenals.

And for a look at what Charlotte's move set will look like in action, the 2K developers shared a clip of her taking on Bayley:

The video shows off Bayley's signature taunts. We can also see what fighting outside the ring looks like. The new camera angles for this part of the match will add realism.

For those curious about the game's achievements, Xbox Achievements provided a full list.

SmackTalks ran through many of them, from winning a match against Lesnar on legend mode to breaking tables with a foe's body:

There isn't anything surprising here. The most fun to check off one's list may be playing as Lesnar and demolishing an opponent to welcome them to Suplex City.

DLC Content

The standard roster for WWE 2K17 is robust enough. With some additional purchases, though, fans can add names from the past and those poised to make an impact on the future.

As seen on the WWE 2K website, one of the optional DLC roster boosters includes a mix of NXT talent and recent arrivals. The Future Stars Pack includes the following wrestlers:

  • Austin Aries
  • Karl Anderson
  • Luke Gallows
  • Mojo Rawley
  • Tye Dillinger

For those looking for more throwback entries to the game, the Legends Pack includes these five Superstars:

  • Brutus Beefcake
  • Eddie Guerrero
  • Greg Valentine
  • Sycho Sid
  • Tatanka

The NXT packs feature Apollo Crews, Nia Jax and Shinsuke Nakamura. One can also acquire a Hall of Fame Showcase featuring 2016 Hall of Famers The Fabulous Freebirds, The Godfather and others.

A DLC pack that features additional moves adds several new in-ring weapons to the game such as T.J. Perkins' TJP Clutch.

To acquire all of the DLC content together, fans can purchase the Season Pass.

Players' options, from which wrestlers to control to what path to take them down, are plentiful. Fans just have to hope the actual game is as exciting as the trailer, that it will live up to all the hype 2K has generated ahead of its release.
