Ryder Cup 2016 Scores: Day 1 Live Standings, Results and Highlights
The United States dominated the morning session, but Europe stormed back with a strong afternoon performance on the first day of 2016 Ryder Cup competition.
All four points from the morning foursome competition at Hazeltine National Golf Club went to the United States, with the pairs of Jordan Speith/Patrick Reed, Phil Mickelson/Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson/Matt Kuchar and Jimmy Walker/Zach Johnson all dishing out strong performances.
But the tables turned in the afternoon fourball session. Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose extracted revenge with a win over Spieth and Reed, while Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar fell short against Rory McIlroy and Thomas Pieters.
Ryan Moore and J.B. Holmes struggled against the all-Spanish team of Sergio Garcia and Rafa Cabrera Bello. That left Brandt Snedeker and Brooks Koepka to collect the only point of the afternoon for the Americans, against a struggling Martin Kaymer and Danny Willett.
The United States needs 14.5 total points to win, while the 2014 team's win at Gleneagles means Europe needs just 14 points to retain the Davis Cup.
Day 2 action will pick up on Saturday morning from Chaska, Minnesota.
