WWE Rumors: Buzz on Road to WWE Clash of Champions 2016 for Week of Sept. 22

Aaron BowerSep 22, 2016

With pay-per-views at almost every turning in WWE since the brand split, fans have had little time to react to Backlash before this weekend's Clash of Champions show puts the spotlight on Raw.

SmackDown set the tone for brand-exclusive pay-per-views with a compelling and well-booked show at Backlash.

And with some big matches on the card for Clash of Champions, news has emerged of a potential spoiler, as well as two significant injury updates that could shape the future of both shows.

Here's this week's rumor roundup.

An Update on Summer Rae's Status

It has been a while since Summer Rae was seen on TV, and judging by the latest rumors emerging this week, it will be a while longer before she's back actively competing in WWE.

Per ProFightDB, she hasn't wrestled since the middle of August, and the reason for her absence from TV could have become a fraction clearer this week.

Pro Wrestling Sheet reported that the former Total Divas star had tests last month that showed problems in her neck, back and elbow.

Apparently she has been suffering with the pain for some time now, and it won't become any more apparent when she'll be able to wrestle again until she meets with doctors in October.

When she does come back, it will be interesting to see how WWE uses her. She will be coming back to a different women's division from the one she left around the time of the brand split, and it will be fascinating to see how it plays out.

Luke Harper Cleared to Compete?

One of the biggest absences from WWE since the brand split—and before that, in fact—has been Luke Harper.

Without Harper, The Wyatt Family has never felt completely strong, certainly not as much as it did when he was around before his serious knee injury.

But news comes from Pro Wrestling Sheet detailing that it is "only a matter of time" before he returns to the ring, with reports saying he's been cleared to compete once again.

This is obviously great news for WWE—and for The Wyatt Family.

Crucially, though, he was undrafted back in July when the brand split took place, so it remains to be seen whether he'll go solo or team up with Bray Wyatt and Erick Rowan once again on SmackDown.

Regardless of that, it's going to be great to see Harper back. He's an outstanding worker in the ring, and if he's teaming up with The Wyatt Family, he will make it undoubtedly stronger.

Spoiler on the Tag Title Match for Clash of Champions

The New Day will put its WWE Tag Team Championships on the line this weekend when it faces Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson, and news has emerged this week about the potential result of that contest.

It's been over a year since Big E, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods won the titles, but Cageside Seats reported that they are set to drop them on Sunday night.

This would be a blow for the trio but not entirely unexpected. Gallows and Anderson have looked like the leading team in terms of realistic challengers for The New Day for quite some time, especially with the way they've been booked of late.

This would all signal a fresh, exciting change for the tag division at a time when the Raw scene looks in need of a refresher.

Whether The New Day sticks together remains to be seen, but this could open the door for Enzo and Cass to perhaps step up and have a serious tilt at the titles in the coming months.
