Corey Coleman, Isaiah Crowell's Fantasy Outlook After Josh McCown's Injury

Joseph ZuckerSep 19, 2016

Per the team's official Twitter account, Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson confirmed quarterback Josh McCown will be unavailable in Week 3, which is bad news for fantasy football owners who have Corey Coleman or Isaiah Crowell.

Both players are coming off strong performances in Week 2. Crowell ran for 133 yards and a touchdown in the 25-20 defeat to the Baltimore Ravens, while Coleman had five receptions for 104 yards and two TDs.

With McCown out injured, their fantasy values take a hit.

The Browns will rely on third-string quarterback Cody Kessler until McCown returns. In four preseason games, the rookie went 19-of-28 for 92 yards and a touchdown.

McCown's injury isn't enough justification for owners to drop Coleman outright. He showed against the Ravens he can be a dynamic receiver down the field.

Still, Kessler is unproven in the NFL, which leaves Coleman's fantasy potential in flux. While it would be frustrating to miss out on another huge fantasy day from the rookie wideout, there's too much risk in starting him as a WR2 or even a flex in standard leagues at the moment.

The fact Kessler is in line to start Sunday against the Miami Dolphins would seemingly mean an increased emphasis on the running game, which would then boost Crowell's value.

Having more touches doesn't necessarily guarantee he will post healthy numbers, though. If the Browns don't have a consistent passing attack with Kessler under center, opposing defenses will load the box and focus more on the running game.

Crowell remains a low-end RB2/flex in standard leagues, and if he's available on the waiver wire, then he's worth adding.

At the same time, fantasy owners may be expecting too much if they're banking on Crowell to repeat his impressive Week 2 stats. A return to his Week 1 numbers (62 rushing yards and one touchdown) is the likelier result with McCown out.
