Triathlete Alistair Brownlee Concedes Race, Helps Exhausted Brother Finish

Kyle NewportSep 19, 2016

When he saw that a fellow runner needed help reaching the finish line at the World Triathlon Series, Alistair Brownlee knew the right thing to do.

He conceded the race and lent a helping hand to a competitor—who happened to be his brother Jonny.

Jonny Brownlee held a lead down the stretch when he found himself too exhausted from the heat to finish on his own. Fortunately, his brother wasn't far behind and came to his aid.

Alistair put his brother's arm on his shoulder and helped him finish the race. Just a class act.

After the race, Alistair explained his decision to concede the race and guide his brother to the finish line to the BBC:

In case you were wondering, here's an update on Jonny:

South Africa's Henri Schoeman wound up winning the race, while Jonny and Alistair finished second and third, respectively. Had Jonny won the race and Mario Mola (who finished fifth) come in fourth or worse, he would have won the series title.
