Claudio Bravo Injury: Manchester City Goalkeeper Injures Hip While on Chile Duty

Matt JonesNov 10, 2016

Manchester City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo suffered a hip problem in Chile's 0-0 FIFA World Cup qualifier with Colombia on Thursday.

According to ESPN FC, Bravo was withdrawn from the game after 64 minutes having collided with Miguel Borja and then Santiago Arias in two separate incidents.

He told Fox Sports (h/t ESPN FC) he did not know what sort of time frame he could be out for, if at all: "At this time, it bothers me a lot. But we have to be smart and realise we have another match on Tuesday."

Bravo was a key summer signing for City boss Pep Guardiola. Former goalkeeper Joe Hart had been a vital part of the fabric at the Etihad Stadium, although the stylistic traits of the new goalkeeper are better attuned to the mantras of the current coach.

Indeed, while Bravo had a tough debut for the club—dropping a few clangers against rivals Manchester United—his work on the ball from a deeper position has already made a big impression.

Bravo is adept at passing the ball out from the back into midfield and cutting out danger with his sharp instincts off the line. In terms of goalkeeping, he’s already made some smart stops, too, and while there are still some adaptations he needs to make to the physical side of the English game, overall City fans will be encouraged by his start.

Indeed, if Bravo is absent for City, Guardiola will have to rely on Willy Caballero at the base of the side. And although he’s had some impressive individual displays in a City shirt, the former Malaga man does have a reputation for being erratic at times.

With his distribution skills, dynamism and experience, Bravo is a key part of this new City setup. Although maligned by some, the Etihad outfit will not be as effective without the 33-year-old to call upon.
